Andrew Matos

I began my CrossFit journey in 2013, when I finally gave in to my sister-in-law’s daily invitations. I hadn’t worked out with a purpose in three years. I played sports in high school, and had a short stint playing college football until I broke my leg. After college, I felt the urge to get competitive again, and started playing flag football competitively with some friends. In four years, I tore both ACLs and had two meniscectomies. This is the point when I decided to hang up the cleats.

For three years, I let myself get too comfortable. I was starting a new career, planning on getting married, preparing to buy a house, and all those other convenient excuses we tend to make for ourselves to make life easier. The truth is, I was out of shape, unhealthy, unhappy, and unfulfilled. Thank God my sister-in-law was so persistent.

Like many of you reading this, I fell in love with CrossFit on the first day. My first WOD was Fran, and I remember lying on the floor in a stupor for ten minutes afterwards wondering what just happened. The workout was short and devastatingly effective. I loved the workout, but I kept coming back for the environment. I love working out with people. The competitive environment in CrossFit is like nothing else. I wanted to be a part of it, and I wanted it to be a bigger part of my life.

I started coaching just one year after my first WOD. I wanted to learn as much as I could, and I wanted to share that with others. There is no greater joy than helping people reach their goals. I coached high school football, adult CrossFit classes at an affiliate, and for the past year, I’ve been lucky enough to teach four CrossFit classes, five days a week to ninth grade students at Lawrence High School. Seeing progress and potential fulfilled is extremely rewarding and I am grateful to be a part of it.
